Brian and Melvyn
Brothers Brian and Melvyn had no idea of physical and emotional journey that they would go on when they decided to sign up for BBC 1’s hit show Race Across the World.
Retired financial advisor Brian and driving instructor Melvyn were given very different opportunities in life. Brian was sent away to boarding school at the age of 8 whilst Melvyn stayed at home and later joined the army. From then on, their lives took different paths with the pair drifting apart and losing the strong bond they’d had as children.
Despite their ‘have and have not’ differences, they always looked out for one another and when Melvyn watched the first series of Race Across the World he could think of no one better to go on the journey with him.
Hoping to reconnect and share quality time together, Melvyn persuaded Brian to join him on the 14000 km trek across China, Nepal and India. Whilst they didn’t walk away with the £20k prize, they did come away with something much more important: a renewed friendship, a new perspective and a deeper bond carved on long dusty bus journeys and nights spent in uncomfortable lodgings!
Brian and Melvyn, proved fan favourites from the start, showing viewers the power of honest, genuine conversations and that it’s never too late for fresh adventures, a zip wire or to tell someone you love them…sort of!
Since returning from Race, the brothers have been surprised and delighted at the impact that their journey has had on others. They have appeared on The One Show, Scott Mills Breakfast Show, Loose Women and taken part in numerous other radio and print interviews.
They are looking forward to seeing what other opportunities lie ahead…whilst they plot their next trip!
